Happy December

Last week we celebrated the end of Term 1. It has been a wonderful first 12 weeks of school. We have been studying the early 1900s and we are just getting into World War 1. Some books we have enjoyed are: “The Yanks Are Coming”, “Winnie’s Great War”, “The Wright Brothers” and “The Winged Watchman”. The kids have been fascinated by this time period and I feel like I am getting a second education.

We studied art prints by Picasso and music by George Gershwin as well. Our term exam days were delightful and we are excited to do a few more relaxed weeks of school before settling into Christmas break.

Last week, Juliette got her braces on. Now we have 2 girls in braces. We are eagerly watching how Karis’ teeth are coming in and they are looking pretty straight, so here’s to hoping we won’t go 3 for 3 on the girls.

Ella and Juliette have both decided to play on a house volleyball team in the new year. They have joked about being the “brace volleyball sisters”. I love seeing how our oldest two have bonded in a new way this year. We are very excited for them to have this opportunity to play volleyball, and have also decided to get our kids to contribute to ways for paying for these activities. Our family has been buying used tables off Facebook marketplace and refinishing them to resell. So far, this has been a great way to make a little extra income. With this added income, we will also be reintroducing piano lessons in January. Our kids are all very excited about upcoming piano lessons.

Karis has been taking an acro class at a local dance school. The boys continue to be hockey obsessed and it has been such fun to see their skills progress. We love watching them play on the same team, and are savouring this season because they will be separated next year.

4 out of the 5 kids are doing musical theatre again this year. Silas has opted to continue to spend his Wednesdays with me. We mostly do errands, go to Mill Lake park, and listen to the Canucks’ sport talk on the radio. We are very informed in all of our hockey facts and news and I love this time of bonding with him.
